Taking the Driving Instructor Part Three Test

The Test will be conducted by a Driving Standards Agency Supervising Examiner and it will last for 1 hour. You will be assessed on your ability to give instruction and to pass on your knowledge to pupils.

The first half hour you will be tested on your ability to instruct a pupil who has never driven before or who may have had a few lessons.

The second half hour you will be tested on your ability to instruct a pupil who is nearly at test standard or recently failed a Driving Test or taking a Pass Plus course or a driver improvement course.

WHEN DO I TAKE THE PART 3 TEST

The Test is normally applied for approximately four months after commencing work on a Trainee Licence. This allows sufficient time to gain that extra knowledge and experience working with learner drivers to acquire the necessary skills to ensure a successful outcome.

Your Personal Trainer will advise when you should apply but usually not before completion of the 20 hours extra mandatory tuition. The training sessions are tailored to individual needs taking you through all the possible scenarios that you may face. With the extra training and real life experience with learner drivers the Part 3 Test should not present any real problems and you should soon be ready to become a Driving Instructor.

THREE PART 3 ATTEMPTS

You are only allowed three attempts at the Part 3 Test which have to be taken (or booked) within two years of passing the Part 1 Test. In the event of you not passing your Part 3 on the third attempt or not applying to take the Part 3 Test within that two year period the whole process starts again, but not until the two year time period has elapsed.

The two year period cannot be extended for any reason. Your Personal Instructor will monitor your time scale and advise you accordingly.

70 Hours Training Course

In the unlikely event that you fail your first attempt at Part 3, the Road Traffic Act states that you must receive a further 5 hours extra tuition before taking your second attempt.

Likewise, if you are extremely unlucky to fail Part 3 at a second attempt, then once again the Driving Standard Agency and the Road Traffic Act demands that you take a further extra 5 hours instruction before sitting your next attempt.

Freetrain will ensure you receive this training in the car and on the road.

Before purchasing any training Course make sure the training covers you for the full 70 hour in car tuition. We at Freetrain believe that Learner Driver Courses should be carried out in the car on the road and not in classrooms.

Full terms and conditions are available in writing from you Personal Trainer.

Gaining your Approved Driving Instructor Licence (ADI)

On passing the Three Qualifying Tests you will be entered onto the Register as a Driving Standards Agency Approved Driving Instructor (Car) and entitled to use this title for as long as your name is on the Register.

You will be sent an Official Certificate of Registration (the Green Badge) showing your name, photograph and ADI number. This must be displayed in the bottom left hand corner of the windscreen whilst giving instruction. You should be aware that the Police and authorised officers of the Department for Transport may ask you to produce your Certificate on demand.

The cost of the Green Badge i.e. Certificate of Registration, is not included in the course fee. The Certificate is renewable every four years.

Lost or stolen Certificates must be reported to the Police to obtain a crime reference number and then reported to the Driving Standards Agency. The fraudulent use of the Certificate of Registration is a serious offence and can result in prosecution.
